These questions uncovered the teachers’ fears of professional failure as well as alignment issues between assessment, written curriculum, and taught curriculum. we’ll take a closer look at how this principal moved his staff past their fears later in the chapter.

Reason 2: State Assessments Fail to Measure What Is Important to Teach in Schools

This reason for disregarding standardized test data is grounded in the identity crisis that has held public schools in its grip for decades. Who are we and what are we here to do? As a profession, we cannot seem to agree on the answers to these questions, nor are we willing to take up the cause and flesh it out. Instead, every school in the country creates separate mission, vision, and belief statements that may or may not be aligned with one another and that take students in different directions. A quick, online jaunt turned up these listed below:

“To provide each student a diverse education in a safe, supportive environment that promotes self-discipline, motivation, and excellence in learning … to assist the students in developing skills to become independent and self-sufficient adults who will succeed and contribute responsibly in a global community” (Marion School District 2).

“To guide its students to be critically thinking, informed and empowered agents of positive change in their communities” (Social Justice Academy, Ulysses S. Grant High School).

“To develop a community of learners in which all students acquire the knowledge, skills, and confidence to meet the challenges of a changing and increasingly diverse society” (Franklin Elementary School).

“To provide a nurturing environment where all members are important” (Commonwealth Elementary).

“To develop students’ higher-level thinking skills, problem-solving and coping behaviors; to help students define their values and goals; and, to cause students to respect themselves and the rights of others” (Academy Elementary).

“To ensure that each child will be challenged to think critically, to problem solve” (Crockett Elementary).
